When To Use Your BCBS Coverage

BCBS covers your visit when there’s a medical reason for it. Here are the conditions we diagnose and treat:

Dry Eye Disease

Not just occasional dryness—chronic symptoms that affect your quality of life. Burning, stinging, blurred vision, eyes that water constantly.

Eye Infections

Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye), viral infections, styes, corneal ulcers. These need prompt treatment.

Diabetic Eye Exams

If you have diabetes, you need annual dilated eye exams to check for diabetic retinopathy. This is medical care—covered by BCBS, not your vision plan.

Macular Degeneration

Age-related changes to the central retina that can affect your vision. Early detection through regular monitoring is critical.

Glaucoma

Elevated eye pressure, optic nerve damage, or a family history that requires monitoring. We use OCT imaging and tonometry to track these conditions over time.

Eye Injuries & Urgent Issues

What BCBS typically doesn’t cover is routine vision care—the annual exam you get just to update your glasses prescription when nothing’s wrong.

For that, most BCBS members have a separate vision plan through VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, or another carrier. We accept those too.

    Cross-sectional views at microscopic resolution. Gold standard for glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease.

  • iCare Tonometer

    Accurate eye pressure measurement without the air puff.

  • Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy

    Detailed examination of cornea, iris, lens, and anterior chamber.
