Dr. Ashley Chennankara’s fascination with optometry began long before optometry school — during a college internship with Eli Lilly, she had the opportunity to observe eye care in rural and tribal areas of South India, an experience that sparked a lifelong passion for the field.

A native Texan and board-certified therapeutic optometrist with glaucoma certification, Dr. Chennankara earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Austin College before going on to complete her Doctor of Optometry at the University of Houston College of Optometry. She brings over 15 years of experience to her patients, having served in a wide range of clinical settings across North Texas.

Education

Dr. Chennankara earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Austin College and her Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry. She has completed internships with the VA Hospital in Temple and Waco, Texas, and Cedar Springs Eye Clinic in South Dallas.

Specializations

Dr. Chennankara specializes in comprehensive eye care, contact lens fittings, and the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, hypertensive and diabetic eye disease, dry eye syndrome, cataracts, and macular degeneration, and has co-managed LASIK, SMILE, and cataract surgeries.

Professional Accolades

Dr. Chennankara holds board certification from the American Board of Optometry and is an active member of both the Texas Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association, bringing over 15 years of experience across North Texas.

Why I chose optometry

What inspired you to become an eye doctor?

“I’ve always believed the eyes are the most fascinating part of the body — there’s a reason we call them the window to the soul. Eye care felt like the perfect intersection of science, connection, and genuine impact. My internship in college, where I got to observe optometry in rural areas of South India, really sealed it for me. Seeing how much of a difference eye care could make for people who had limited access to it, that was a turning point.”

What do you wish people knew about optometry?

“That good vision doesn’t always mean healthy eyes. A lot of people assume that if they can see clearly, everything is fine, but some of the most serious eye conditions, like glaucoma and macular degeneration, can develop without any noticeable changes to your vision until significant damage has already occurred. That’s why regular eye exams are so important, even when you think your eyes are perfectly fine.”

Outside of work, Dr. Chennankara is a devoted wife and mother. She and her husband have been married for 17 years and are parents to an 11-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son. Family is at the center of her life, and she stays close with her siblings and extended family. When she’s not in the clinic, you’ll find her traveling, discovering new restaurants, or indulging in a little retail therapy at Sephora or Ulta.
