IN-NETWORK BCBS PROVIDER
BCBS covers medical eye care. Here's what that means.
BCBS MEDICAL
Medical Eye Conditions
Infections, dry eye, diabetes-related issues, glaucoma, injuries, inflammation.
SEPARATE VISION PLAN
Routine Vision Care
Annual exams when nothing’s wrong, glasses prescriptions, contact lenses, frames.
MEDICAL COVERAGE
When to use your BCBS coverage
01
Dry Eye Disease
Not just occasional dryness — chronic symptoms that affect your quality of life. Burning, stinging, blurred vision, eyes that water constantly.
02
Eye Infections
Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye), viral infections, styes, corneal ulcers. These need prompt treatment.
03
Diabetic Eye Exams
If you have diabetes, you need annual dilated exams to check for diabetic retinopathy. This is medical care — covered by BCBS, not your vision plan.
04
Macular Degeneration
Age-related changes to the central retina that can affect your vision. Early detection through regular monitoring is critical.
05
Glaucoma
Elevated eye pressure, optic nerve damage, or a family history that requires monitoring. We use OCT imaging and tonometry to track it over time.
06
Eye Injuries & Urgent Issues
Scratched cornea, foreign object, chemical exposure, blunt trauma. Also flashes, floaters, sudden blurriness, or vision loss.
ROUTINE CARE
When to use your vision plan
What BCBS typically doesn’t cover is routine vision care — the annual exam you get just to update your glasses prescription when nothing’s wrong.
For that, most BCBS members have a separate vision plan through VSP, EyeMed, Davis Vision, or another carrier. We accept those too.
- Annual exam when your eyes feel fine
- Updated glasses or contact lens prescription
- Shopping for new frames or contacts
We'll help you use the right one
If you have both BCBS and a vision plan, we'll help you use the right coverage.
Our billing team knows how to code visits appropriately so you get the coverage you're entitled to.
YOUR CARE TEAM
BCBS-credentialed doctors
All four of our doctors are credentialed with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas to provide medical eye care. Our team has the training and diagnostic equipment to identify conditions early and manage them effectively.
We’re not just checking boxes. When you come in with an eye-health concern, we take the time to understand your symptoms, run the appropriate tests, explain what we find, and develop a treatment plan that makes sense for your situation.
DIAGNOSTIC CAPABILITIES
Optomap Ultra-Widefield
Captures nearly 200° of your retina. Essential for detecting diabetic changes, retinal tears, and peripheral abnormalities.
OCT Imaging
Cross-sectional views at microscopic resolution. The gold standard for glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease.
iCare Tonometer
Accurate eye-pressure measurement without the air puff.
Slit Lamp Biomicroscopy
Detailed examination of the cornea, iris, lens, and anterior chamber.
